Tummy Issues

Functional gastrointestinal disorders affect 35%-70% of people at one time in their life.  Women are more likely to suffer from these issues.  So let’s talk about some ways to help out….

Digestion is controlled by the enteric nervous system.  There are over a million nerves that aid in digesting our foods.  One of the bigger triggers for GI pain is STRESS!  It can cause your central nervous system to shut down blood flow, affect the contractions of digestive muscles, and decrease secretions needed for digestion. Stress can cause the esophagus to spasm and increase acid in stomach, which can cause indigestion, nausea, and diarrhea.  When a person is stressed, it can cause a complete upset of the digestive system resulting in either diarrhea and/or constipation.  What’s even worse, is can cause inflammation of the GI system which can make you more susceptible to infections.

I have several options in my bag of oils for help in relieving stress.

1. Massage Blend – This blend supports muscle and joint comfort and function.  This can be done simply by inhaling the aroma from the bottle.

2.Ylang Ylang – This single oil helps to balance hormones, lift your mood, while having a calming effect.  It helps to lessen tension and stress and promote a positive outlook.

3. Focus Blend – This blend contains oils that promotes a healthy thought process.  I would use this across the back of the neck.

Now, may I suggest that you balance yourself out on an every-day basis.  How do I do that?  Applying a drop of Grounding Blend to the big toe, morning and night, can help to keep yourself grounded.  When I’m grounded, things don’t stress me out as much.

OK, so we know how to help relieve stress….sometimes we need a little help with our GI system and it’s not related to stress.  For times like this, a wonderful blend that works well for me is the Digestive Blend.  This blend aids in digestion and eases occasional stomach discomfort. Try putting a couple of drops on your tummy in a clockwise motion around the belly-button.

Please know that I strongly suggest you seek medical attention if your digestive issues are chronic.  Essential oils are not meant to cure, but to help the body heal itself.  There are certain situations that medical attention is appropriate and I don’t suggest you delay in seeing a professional.  Just make sure you use your brain and listen to your gut!  And don’t forget the exercise!!  That is one of the best ways to relieve stress!
